Our planet’s biosphere is under increasing pressure from pollution, climate change, overexploitation, and competition amongst different forms of land use. Biodiversity is rapidly declining.
It remains largely unclear how the biosphere will respond, how societies will be affected, and what could be done to steer this change to the benefit of humanity.
Ecology is an enabling science in this context. To be effective, however, it needs a stronger theoretical background. This calls for institutions to advocate and develop the role of theoretical ecology in both the scientific community and the public eye.
The International Initiative for Theoretical Ecology is an integrated platform to promote unity, visibility, teaching, funding, advancement and application of theoretical ecology. It aims to build and establish theory as a natural foundation of ecology. It also works to support and strengthen the spirit of pride and collaboration within the community.
